Recommendations
General
Recommendations are authoritative statements on the meaning of
the provisions in the CEDAW Convention with respect to the rights
of women and the obligations of the State, and on what kind of
information should be included in State Party reports. To date,
there are 25 General Recommendations under the CEDAW Convention.
These are produced by the CEDAW Committee as mandated by article
21 of the CEDAW Convention. General Recommendations deal with
issues related to specific articles that have been noted as a
concern during consideration of reports; and on Convention-related
issues, such as the impact of reservations, violence against women
etc. Some important General Recommendations (GR) are listed below:

At its 27th Session, the CEDAW Committee agreed to formulate a General Recommendation based on its statement to the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, and a General Recommendation on the right of older women to non-discrimination.
At its 30th Session, however, the Committee decided that its next general recommendation, i.e. No. 26, should elaborate on Article 2 of the CEDAW Convention. The members of the CEDAW Committee working on the elements of this general recommendation are Shanthi Dairiam, Cornelis Flinterman, Hugette Gnacadja, Krisztina Morvai, Silvia Pimentel, and Dubravka Simanovic.
At its 32nd Session, the Committee reviewed and updated the list of proposed general recommendations, as well as identified Committee members interested in working on these:
- Migrant women (Magalys Arocha Dominguez, Shanthi Dairiam, Salma Khan, Rosario Manalo, Heisoo Shin)
- Gender, race and ethnicity (Cornelis Flinterman, Pramila Patten , Victoria Popescu, Glenda Simms, Dubravka Simanovic, Regina Tavares da Silva)
- Reservations (Dorcas Coker-Appiah, Hanna Beate Schopp-Schilling)
- Role of NGOs, including in the process of reporting (Dorcas Coker-Appiah, Hanna Beate Schopp-Schilling)
- Article 6 on trafficking and prostitution (Francoise Gaspard, Krisztina Morvai)
- The situation of women in special circumstances
- Women with disabilities
- Older women
- The girl child
- Article 3 on measures to guarantee equality between men and women
- Refugee women
The CEDAW Committee has scheduled a discussion on the proposed General Recommendation on Article 2 (State Obligation) and the General Recommendation on Migrant Women at 10am on 27 January 2006 . This will take place during the 34th CEDAW Session in New York.
