Important
Pointers
When preparing
information to the CEDAW Committee, it is highly recommended
that the following points are considered from the outset:
Before
undertaking the preparation of information
-
Remember
that the violations must have occurred within the jurisdiction
of a States party to both the CEDAW
Convention and the OP-CEDAW.
-
Remember that the State party must not have opted-out
of the Inquiry Procedure.
-
Ensure that the information and your submission are available
in one of the working languages of the CEDAW Committee (English,
French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Mandarin/Chinese)
When
preparing information
-
Information
should be accurate and reliable. Information on the grave
and/or systematic nature of the violations should be as exhaustive
as possible.
-
Violations
should be linked to rights and obligations of the CEDAW Convention.
-
If the inquiry lacks detail, the Division for the Advancement
of Women may seek more information from the author, causing
considerable delay to the process.
-
Although the main submission must be in writing, supporting
information may be provided by other means (e.g. a video,
audio material, etc.).
When
submitting information
-
The
information must expressly indicate that it is being submitted
for the purposes of initiating an inquiry.
-
Information may be received from an anonymous source. However,
it is important to note that it will be more likely for the
CEDAW Committee to take immediate action when the information
provided is accurate, verifiable, and provided by reliable
sources such as NGOs and human rights institutions. In all
cases, the confidentiality of the sender of information will
be maintained.
-
The information must be submitted to the Division
on the Advancement of Women (DAW). Although information
may be submitted electronically, it is also recommended to
send a set of copies of all documents by courier.
